This is quite the most meaningful and incredibly touching story about a boy and a dog, both of whom are remarkable in themselves. Over the past couple of years Owen and Haatchi have developed an inseparable and totally unique bond through a mutual understanding of each other’s lives. Both Owen and Haatchi have disabilities, yet to each other they are just perfect. This is their very moving story of how they came to be together.
Owen Howkens was born with a rare genetic disorder, Schwartz-Jampel syndrome. For the first few years of his life he struggled with the disability and life was exceptionally difficult. His parents then decided that a dog might just be the thing to bring Owen out of his shell a little bit more so, rather than going to the pet shop to buy a puppy, they went to a rescue center to find a dog who had not been so lucky in life either.
That is when they came across Haatchi, an Anatolian Shepherd dog, who had been tied to a railtrack, abandoned and left for dead. When he was rescued his tethered leg was so badly damaged it had to be removed, and hence why you can only see three legs in our main picture. Unfortunately though, the first winter Haatchi was with Owen he slipped on some ice and tore the ligaments in his remaining back leg. The vet decided that the best thing to do was to have him put down, but Owen’s father wasn’t going to let that happen.
They built a recovery cage in the house to stop Haatchi from trying to run around and do more damage, and it was during this time of recovery that Owen would crawl into Haatchi’s cage and comfort him as he understood the dog’s pain and frustration. From the non the bond just grew and grew. Owen, who is now eight, has changed considerably since Haatchi came into his life and he has improved tremendously at school according to his father. It is so lovely to think that while there are many kind-hearted people out there who will give a deserving home to a disabled dog, and many wonderful dogs who help people who themselves have disabilities, rarely do you find such a mutually beneficial relationship.
As Owen says ““He is my best friend and we look after each other all the time, like best friends should.” To find out more about this inspirational story, you can read their book, Haatchi & Little B: The Inspiring True Story of One Boy and His Dog and don’t forget to share this story with your friends, they will gain inspiration from this exceptional pair too.
